چکیده

PCR: polymerase chain reaction INTRODUCTION Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease endemic to 88 countries on 5 continents. It is estimated that there are 1 to 1.5 million cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis among local populations, but leishmaniasis also commonly affects travelers to these endemic countries. Leishmaniasis is caused by parasitic protozoa in the genus Leishmania, which are transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies, and is divided into 2 categories: Old World and New World. Old World leishmaniasis is considered mostly benign and self-limited, whereas NewWorld species are able to cause a wide array of clinical manifestations, from benign to life-threatening disease. Through dissemination via blood, lymph, and local extension, NewWorld Leishmania species can cause mucosal and visceral involvement. Although mucosal leishmaniasis was originally attributed exclusively to Leishmania braziliensis, it is now known that Leishmania panamensis, Leishmania guyanensis, and Leishmania peruviana, all of the Viannia subgenuses found in Central and South America, may also cause mucosal involvement. Herein, we present an uncommon case of New World leishmaniasis in 2 travelers returning to the United States.

Zosteriform cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania ( Viannia ) panamensis and Leishmania ( Viannia ) braziliensis: report of three cases.

In Colombia, zosteriform leishmaniasis is a little-known and infrequent clinical variant of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Its clinical features include one or more plaques made up of papules and pseudo-vesicles, which conform to a lineal pattern, as well as satellite lesions that affect one or more dermatomes, without crossing the median line. We present three zosteriform cutaneous leishmaniasis cas...

Detection of Leishmania in unaffected mucosal tissues of patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Viannia) species.

BACKGROUND Leishmania (Viannia) species are the principal cause of mucosal leishmaniasis. The natural history and pathogenesis of mucosal disease are enigmatic. Parasitological evaluation of mucosal tissues has been constrained by the invasiveness of conventional sampling methods. METHODS We evaluated the presence of Leishmania in the mucosa of 26 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis and 2 p...

Histopathological characteristics of cutaneous lesions caused by Leishmania Viannia panamensis in Panama

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic disease in the Republic of Panama, caused by Leishmania (Viannia) parasites, whose most common clinical manifestation is the presence of ulcerated lesions on the skin. These lesions usually present a chronic inflammatory reaction, sometimes granulomatous, with the presence of lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages. This study describes the histopath...

The genome of Leishmania panamensis: insights into genomics of the L. (Viannia) subgenus.

Kinetoplastid parasites of the Leishmania genus cause several forms of leishmaniasis. Leishmania species pathogenic to human are separated into two subgenera, Leishmania (Leishmania) and L. (Viannia). Species from the Viannia subgenus cause predominantly cutaneous leishmaniasis in Central and South America, occasionally leading to more severe clinical presentations. Although the genomes of seve...

BODY WEIGHT AS A DETERMINANT OF CLINICAL EVOLUTION IN HAMSTERS (Mesocricetus auratus) INFECTED WITH Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis

The clinical outcome of infection with Leishmania species of the subgenus Viannia in hamster model (Mesocricetus auratus) has shown to be different depending on experimental protocol. Body weight has been a relevant determinant of the clinical outcome of the infection in hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis but its importance as a clinical parameter in hamsters with cutaneous leishmaniasis is n...
